AXELOS launches ITIL® Practitioner – offering millions of ITSM professionals the chance to enhance their learning
ITIL Practitioner will help organizations and individuals increase the value they obtain from adopting and adapting the ITIL framework.
AXELOS has today launched ITIL® Practitioner – the new qualification of the world’s most widely adopted service management framework.
ITIL Practitioner is the most significant recent evolution in the ITIL best practice framework, which was first introduced by the UK Government in 1989 and is now - after going through several iterations - used in more than 150 countries with more than a quarter of a million ITIL certifications awarded around the world each year.
The new qualification will equip ITSM (IT service management) professionals with skills to successfully adopt and adapt ITIL to improve service management capabilities - organisational change management, communication, metrics and measurement - in line with business goals. It will be the next step after ITIL Foundation for professionals who have already learned the basics of ITSM and the business value of well-designed and delivered services. ITIL Practitioner is a fundamental enabler for applying valuable specialist skills acquired in the ITIL Intermediate Lifecycle and Capabilities qualifications.
As part of the development of ITIL Practitioner, AXELOS has used crowdsourcing – gathering ideas, current challenges and advice from ITSM professionals from across the world. These ideas, along with feedback from AXELOS’s 36,000 strong online community, have been collated by AXELOS head of ITSM Kaimar Karu and the ITIL Practitioner Architect Team (PAT) - Kevin Behr, Karen Ferris, Lou Hunnebeck, Barclay Rae, Stuart Rance and Paul Wilkinson – which has brought years of experience from all aspects of ITSM.
AXELOS CEO Abid Ismail said: “The development of ITIL Practitioner is a direct response to the feedback we have received from ITSM professionals from around the world, who told us they wanted additional, practical elements to complement the existing ITIL guidance.
“Whereas ITIL Foundation focuses on the ‘what’ and the ‘why’, ITIL Practitioner provides individuals with practical guidance on ‘how’ to adopt and adapt. The new qualification puts the factual knowledge of ITIL Foundation into a more practical context and gives individuals more confidence in their ability to participate in and contribute to an ITSM initiative.”
AXELOS is a joint venture company co-owned by Capita plc and the UK Government’s Cabinet Office. A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “Boosting digital and tech skills is vital for economic growth. AXELOS is using its expertise to help create highly skilled IT experts who will play an important role in shaping the economy and services of the future. This unique joint venture between the Government and Capita is going from strength to strength. It is a great example of how drawing on the strengths of a commercial organisation we can realise the benefit of Government assets and help to spread best practice to a global audience.”
A new publication “ITIL Practitioner Guidance” covers the skills and practical application of knowledge and is available from the AXELOS website, the TSO website and Amazon. While self-study is allowed, it is strongly recommended to attend an accredited training course run by AXELOS’ global partner network. The first ITIL Practitioner exams are expected to be sat this month.
