Global support network to champion the world of work for L&D freelancers
Launching 1st September: “L&D Free Spirits” – a global network for freelancers and self-employed professionals in Learning and Development
Designed as the premier hub for networking, collaboration and professional growth, L&D Free Spirits is set to revolutionise how freelancers and self-employed professionals in the Learning and Development (L&D) industry connect and thrive.
The new network, launching 1st September, will bring together the self-employed community globally.
Founder Kim Ellis, said:
“There is a need for a network like L&D Free Spirits, one that wasn’t available when I first became self-employed. Freelancers across L&D are crying out for dedicated development opportunities, business knowledge support and a platform to showcase their services and host their portfolios.”
L&D Free Spirits surveyed a broad proportion of freelancers across L&D (2024) to understand what resources or support they wished they had access to. Respondents included those just starting their self-employed journey and those working freelance for more than 10 years, all providing a range of services.
100% confirmed they find it difficult to secure new L&D projects or clients, with over 90% wanting better platforms for finding work. 72% highlighted a need for more networking opportunities. 64% indicated they needed brand and marketing support plus nearly half confirmed they didn’t have access to legal and financial advice.
Further research conducted in 2024* (LinkedIn), compared to 2021 (LinkedIn), indicated a 92% rise in freelancers and contractors in the L&D industry.
Kim said:
“Such a surge in self-employment could come from the 2020 shift in work/life balance or companies downsizing and making people redundant. Whatever the reason, the increase in self-employment suggests a growing confidence and interest in freelancing within the L&D community, indicating changing preferences and the evolving nature of work. Many L&D professionals seek the flexibility and control over their work that freelancing offers. The ability to choose projects, set schedules, and work from various locations are significant draws. L&D Free Spirits provides dedicated support to those wanting to make the leap and join a vibrant community of freelancers and self-employed professionals.”
Membership will provide an online profile for showcasing services and hosting an e-portfolio, as well as access to a directory of freelancers across the L&D industry to build connections and collaborations. Membership benefits will include a programme of online events and webinars dedicated to upskilling, a calendar of virtual social events to network with the global community, curated learning resources and development tools to broaden business knowledge, and a jobs board.
Kim added:
