Inspiration Award: Brooke and Learn Appeal Take Access To Veterinary, Farriery and Husbandry Training To Rural Communities Worldwide
Learn Appeal is delighted to help power the innovative project which contributed to Dr Ebony Escalona of Brooke receiving one of the first Inspiration Awards from the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons). The offline learning experience available provided by the Learn Appeal Capsule not only provides training to those who need it the most, it also improves the welfare of working animals.
Most of us probably have very little idea that the lives and welfare of people and animals are intertwined. Brooke estimates that ‘over 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules provide invaluable support to daily life for an estimated 600 million people (eight percent of the world's population) in some of the poorest places in the world, through haulage, transportation and production. Healthy working horses, donkeys and mules help to put food on their tables, send their children to school and build better futures for themselves and their families’.
Brooke is doing fantastic work to improve equine welfare and one of their key challenges is providing training to those that care for the equines on a daily basis. Dr Ebony Escalona has interest in technology and saw the potential of the Learn Appeal Capsule at the Learning Technology Summer Forum in 2016. Ebony, her colleague and fellow vet, Sophia Salmon and Lesley Price, Senior Consultant at Learn Appeal, then started working on a joint innovation project.
The outcome is Brooke, using the Learn Appeal Capsule, now provides an interactive offline e-learning experience which improves both training and, as a direct consequence, the health and welfare of working horses, mules and donkeys.
Dr Escalona commented, “No matter how skilled the trainer, a lack of internet and mains electricity are a very real hurdle in getting audiences to have the ‘lightbulb moment’ that is needed to really grasp new skills of this nature. The Learn Appeal Capsule has provided a unique means to generate and deliver the sort of teaching resources that we believe can really make a difference.”
Jonathan Satchell, Founder of Learn Appeal, said “Learn Appeal is delighted to be involved with such an innovative and inspiring project and we offer our sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Escalona and Brooke on this award”.
