Learning Nexus sponsors award for Student of the Year at the annual Kilmarnock College Graduation ceremony
On Saturday 2 November, Kilmarnock College in Scotland held their annual Graduation and Awards ceremony for the 2012 graduates. This was the last graduation for the College before the merger with other colleges in Ayrshire and the assumption of a new name. For each of the College’s departments, an award is given out each year to one student who has excelled.
Learning Nexus was invited to attend the ceremony, and sponsored the award for the Student of the Year in the Care and Early Years faculty, awarded to Brian Kimmett, one of 115 candidates. Brian had previously been working as a Process Operator and Quality Control Inspector in a ceramics factory, but wanted to work in the care sector to help others less fortunate, so decided to enrol at Kilmarnock College to achieve the qualifications he needed.
Brian has been enrolled at the College since 2010, and completed his NC and HNC in Social Care, and during the HNC he had the chance to do a work placement with Turning Point Scotland.
He is now working with Alzheimer Scotland as a Personal Assistant, and hopes to continue to work in the care sector and utilise his knowledge, skills and qualities to make life better for others. He has also returned to college as an evening class student two nights a week, studying PDA Addictions Counselling and HNC Counselling to further his qualifications.
Ken George, Chairman of Learning Nexus was in attendance, and had this to say, "Brian was honoured for his voluntary work with other students, mentoring them while he pursued his own studies. He was not only top of his department but received the College's award for being the top student of the year. He has also been nominated for a Scotland-wide award. Learning Nexus is proud to have been involved, and look forward to seeing the calibre of students at next year's event".
