Learning Producer: Retooling the Instructional Designer
“Retooling” Instructional Designers into Learning Producers. Learners, Learning Technology, Learning Formats, and Learning Expectations Require Learning Producers.
The learning and learner of today and tomorrow require new and evolving skills from learning professionals. According to Learning 2018 Host & Curator Elliott Masie, “It is time to ‘Retool’ Instructional Designers into Learning Producers.” With this in mind, Learning Producer roles will be explored at Learning 2018 in Orlando this November 4-7.
The skills of instructional design will continue to be important, but the Learning Producer has a wider set of competencies and capacities including:
• UserExperience
• Design Thinking
• Learning Data Analytics
• Curation Ecosystems
• Personalization Strategies
• Workflow and Performance Support
• Integration with Evolving AI & Machine Learning
• Understanding of Brain Science and Cognitive Behavior
• The “LEGO” Model of Content and Experience Development
• Globalization of Learning Resources
• And More…
The Learning Producer will add many of these skills to their instructional design skills. As a Producer, much of the content they’ll be assembling and distributing will be from Open or External Resources. As a Producer, they will facilitate a wider range of choices of the format, setting, intensity, and framework of learning activities. And, as a Learning Producer, their use of Data and Analytics will become a major force in design and personalization.
Finally, the Learning Producer title provides better positioning for future promotions, with a wider set of transferable skills and readiness to play other roles in other parts of the organization.
Elliott Masie is both a learning futurist and a Broadway Producer. MASIE Productions has produced over 26 shows including Kinky Boots, The Prom, American Son, Allegiance, and (opening soon) The Cher Show. “Designing and delivering great workplace learning requires a producer – just as creating a great theater experience,” said Masie.
Learning 2018 is programmed by The Learning CONSORTIUM, a collaborative of 200 global corporations focused on improving workplace learning and training. Hosted and curated by Elliott Masie, Learning 2018 brings together several thousand learning professionals as they focus on the changing nature of workplace education and development. Learning 2018 will feature 150+ Learning Experiences, Activities, and Sessions.
