Harnessing innovation in L&D theory & user-centred learning are key themes at World of Learning
The UK’s most comprehensive learning event takes place 19 & 20 October at Birmingham’s NEC. Featuring extensive opportunities to discover the latest in L&D and with a real focus on driving learning forward to deliver optimal results for business, visitors to World of Learning will come away with inspiration, solutions and tactics to apply immediately to their learning initiatives.
Back this year is the extremely popular Learning Design Live conference. Sponsored by the eLearning Network (eLN) this programme of seven conference sessions is specifically for anyone involved in learning tech design and covers topics including the very latest gamification techniques, creating effective micro-learning and enhancing the visual aspects of content. Free to attend, Learning Design Live encourages those involved in learning tech design to share ideas and advice with other design specialists.
This year’s World of Learning exhibition will offer a wide range of Inspiration Zones where exhibition visitors can experience the latest in L&D and get practical advice at a range of interactive attractions.
New for this year is the Apprenticeship Zone which has been launched in response to the announcement in July 2015 of the introduction of an Apprenticeship Levy which many businesses will start paying in April 2017. The Apprenticeship Zone at World of Learning offers a dedicated free seminar programme covering everything employers need to know, while apprenticeship training providers exhibit alongside.
The Technology Test Drive area is where visitors can test the latest innovations at their own pace and discover how cutting-edge technology can support their organisation’s learning objectives and deliver business value.
A series of free, interactive skills sessions is offered in the Experiential Learning Zone where exhibition visitors can take part in a series of hands-on bite-sized sessions on key areas such as engagement, wellbeing and leadership development.
The Mindfulness Zone allows visitors to try out mindfulness techniques and to learn how to integrate them into the workplace to enhance their own mental wellbeing and that of the wider workforce.
At the Team Building zone visitors can participate in some fun challenges, including tackling a full-scale climbing wall, and will learn how these can be incorporated into a team or leadership programme. The Resilience zone will shed light on building resilience to support an agile workforce.
A further chance to get one-to-one advice on a variety of L&D topics is facilitated at the Ask the Expert zone, and the Business Lounge offers a chance to relax, catch up with colleagues or even touch base with the office.
Alongside these free exhibition features is a comprehensive programme of educational seminars across two theatres. A host of experts from leading companies such as How to Moodle, Belbin, Ask and Litmos by CallidusCloud will cover key industry subjects including virtual learning, neuroscience, leadership, user-centred learning, driving business improvement and measuring success, value and ROI. The seminars are free to attend.
This year’s Fringe seminars see L&D experts tackling topics wider to the conference’s central themes. These include the micro-learning, using neuroscience to develop leaders, and marketing for learning providers.
Topping the list of “Top Ten” most influential people in the world in the corporate e-learning sector, e-learning analyst Craig Weiss will use his keynote ‘An objective evaluation – selecting the right LMS for you’ to advise on how to identify exactly what you need and avoid mistakes, as well as top tips for selecting the right LMS.
Also high in this prestigious list of e-learning influencers is Laura Overton, MD of Towards Maturity. Laura will tackle the subject ‘Are we ready for the future of learning?’ in her keynote session. She’ll provide insights from L&D leaders and learners around the globe to explore practical ideas to help us get ready for the future of learning today.
In the closing keynote of the Fringe programme, Liggy Webb will discuss stress, as she explains: “I will be turning stress on its ahead and challenging some of the perceptions we may have by exploring our ability to use stress to our advantage!”
The fringe programme also includes a panel discussion on industry knowledge verses institutional knowledge, with panel members exploring how institutions can ensure both industry and company-specific knowledge can actively permeate their organisations.
The exhibition runs alongside the renowned World of Learning conference which offers inspiration from the industry’s leading thinkers and practitioners in a two-day programme of seminars.
