True Business Intelligence: Information Builders Leverages Single-Source XML for Content Reuse across Multiple Training Products
Company increases delivery modalities and drives new revenue streams in face of reduced headcount and tightened budgets.
Xyleme, Inc., a leading provider of 100% XML, open and standards-based learning content management solutions today announced that Business Intelligence vendor, Information Builders, an independent leader in business intelligence (BI) solutions, has implemented Xyleme LCMS for the development of product training materials for their over 12,000 customers and 350 business partners. A critical component of the project is effortless content reusability across multiple delivery formats enabled by a single-source of open, non-proprietary XML content. Initial delivery formats include: instructor-led, virtual classroom, e-learning, self-paced learning and e-books.
Information Builders offers over 50 different courses in a variety of formats for their mission-critical analytical software. These training materials rely heavily on media such as Flash, Captivate and images to incorporate use-case scenarios and best practices. They are also updated on a frequent basis to reflect new releases and product updates. With the single-source Xyleme LCMS, Information Builders no longer struggles with maintaining multiple versions of the same content and media files for each separate delivery format, which was resource-intensive and error-prone. Equally important is Xyleme's XML-based approach which allows Information Builders to extract text from images, Flash and video. This separation of content from presentation allows Information Builders to take better advantage of media files across delivery formats and dramatically increases the level of interactivity within training courses.
"One of the most exciting outcomes of our single-source XML initiative is that we now look at training content development in a whole new light," commented Amanda Regan, Technical Director of Course Development at Information Builders. "A structured approach to authoring not only streamlines course development, the ease of reuse across courses and delivery formats is sparking numerous ideas for linking resources, driving interactivity and improving the learner experience."
"With Xyleme LCMS, we recovered our costs within 12 months with an additional 20% ROI within the next six months," said Kristin Devlin, Executive Director of Customer Education at Information Builders. "In an environment of tightened budgets and reduced headcount, we have been able to not only significantly decrease the cost of developing our print and e-learning content, but have also expanded our delivery offerings and created new revenue generating training products. This would not have been possible without an XML-based single-source product."
