The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Scotland will host a unique event at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Edinburgh, set to explore the relationship between heraldry and branding in contemporary marketing.

It follows a number of recent cases in which organisations have fallen foul of laws governing the use of coats of arms and will examine cases such as that faced by Airdrieonians FC, warned in 2015 by the Procurator Fiscal to  Lyon Court to change its badge or face prosecution.

Set to appeal to marketing, design and brand professionals, the CIM event promises expert insight from leading authority Elizabeth Roads LVO – Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records at the Court of the Lord Lyon from 1986 to 2018 and a founder member of the Heraldry Society – and will feature a question and answer session lasting approximately one hour.

Elizabeth Roads LVO, Snawdoun Herald of Arms, will offer a practical introduction to heraldry and guidance on when and how to work with the Court of the Lyon on logo design.

CIM Scotland board member, Rob Moffat, said: “Elizabeth has a wealth of knowledge in the field of heraldry and we are incredibly excited for her to share her expertise at the next CIM event.”

Elizabeth Roads LVO joined the staff of the Court of the Lord Lyon in 1975 and was appointed Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records in 1986, retiring in 2018. In this position she maintained among other things, the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland.

Coats of arms date back to the 12th century. First displayed on battle shields, it remains illegal in the UK to assume another person’s coat of arms.

The lecture is open to CIM members and non-members and is a unique opportunity for anyone working in a range of marketing disciplines, to learn about heraldry and its relevance to branding, from a genuine authority on the subject. Other topics which will be covered include the granting of arms, corporate identity and the distinction between a logo and a coat of arms.

Rob Moffat added: “This event will be invaluable to everyone from designers to creative directors and is a one-off opportunity – don’t miss out.”

Tickets for CIM members, studying members and students are £15, and £20 for non-members. DoubleTree by Hilton, Edinburgh, 14 November, 6:00 pm.
