The CIPD has announced that its chief executive, Peter Cheese, will retire at the end of June 2026, marking the conclusion of a 14-year tenure that has seen the professional body for HR and people development expand its global influence and membership base.

Under Cheese’s leadership, the CIPD has grown from 120,000 to 165,000 members, with record numbers studying its qualifications worldwide. The organisation has strengthened its role as the standard-setting body for the HR profession, deepening its policy voice and influence across business, education and government.

Announcing his decision, Cheese said he would step down to spend more time with his family and to pursue other professional interests, including non-executive roles, writing and speaking engagements.

Peter Cheese, Chief Executive of the CIPD, said:After what will be 14 years leading the CIPD, I’ve decided the time is right to retire and hand over to a new leader.’

‘It has been a great privilege to serve the profession and advocate for what we do in so many forums. I look forward to supporting a smooth transition and to continuing to promote a positive future of work in times of significant change.’

During his tenure, Cheese has been widely credited with modernising the CIPD’s strategy and strengthening its position as a global authority on people management and the future of work. He has been a prominent voice on workplace transformation, responsible business and the growing role of HR in shaping organisational culture and performance.

Professor Chris Bones, chair of the CIPD Board, said ‘Cheese’s impact ‘cannot be overstated’. He added: ‘Peter’s leadership has transformed the CIPD. As we enter a new era shaped by automation and AI, the organisation is well placed to continue supporting the profession to build capability for the future of work.’

Rt Hon Chloe Smith, president of the CIPD, also paid tribute to Cheese’s leadership, describing him as ‘an outstanding leader and champion of our profession’. She said: ‘His engagement and commitment to our members and partners has been remarkable. As we prepare for a change in leadership, our vision remains clear: to enable people professionals to be at the heart of business, helping organisations and their people adapt and thrive.’

The CIPD Board will begin the process of recruiting a new chief executive to oversee the next phase of its development as the HR profession continues to navigate rapid technological and societal change.
