Imagine if we could assess skills, not through quizzes or assessments, but simply by going about our daily work. No surveys, no training needs analysis, no stepping out of the day’s work to figure out what skills you need. Just an intelligent layer quietly observing how you lead a meeting, contribute to a discussion or respond to a colleague and giving you feedback on the skills you might need to improve and how to improve them.

That’s the promise of Helix, a new kind of skills intelligence platform launched this month in London by workplace tech company, 5app.

Helix runs entirely in the flow of work, assessing soft skills like communication, leadership, active listening and coaching, as they naturally show up as we go about our work using our everyday apps.

It gives users a personal soft skills score, highlights areas to improve and links to development resources, all right in the workflow.

Inspired by the structure of DNA, Helix is named to reflect how deeply skills are embedded in the way we work, part of our professional makeup.

Helix works in everyday meeting apps such as Google Meet, Teams and Zoom, and in future will work with other office productivity apps, such as e-mail, chat and other team collaboration applications.

Nine priority soft skills are included today, including active listening, change management, coachability, coaching, communication, leadership and strategic vision, with the promise of around one hundred more in the roadmap. And the team plans to add hard skills and industry-specific skills.

At the launch Learning News caught up with Helix Head of Product, James Cranwell and 5app CEO, Philip Huthwaite.
