The Bribery Act 2010 updates old, and much-criticised, laws on bribery and also fulfils European Treaty obligations. The Act creates offences which may be committed by individuals as well as an offence by a commercial organisation of failing to prevent bribery.

The penalties for organisations are high, with a criminal conviction leading to unlimited fines and possible exclusion from government contracts across the European Union. For individuals, the maximum sentence is 10 years imprisonment.
